I recently had a project that required some specific tuning to the tracking of the text – particularly with the headings and on display text. Browsers have come a long way in their capabilities, and now we have the letter-spacing property. This controls the tracking of the letters and allows you to get extra creative with typography (yay!). You can learn more about the property on CSS Tricks.
How to convert from tracking to letter spacing?
This was the problem I had, I was working from print guidelines and naturally all I had to go on was “Tracking: 400”. The letter spacing property works from ems or pixels. Fortunately for us, Nicholas Cerminara has written a conversion tool! There’s an explanation over there of why the numbers are as they are. 400 became 0.4em and looked great on screen.
